A widespread and often common butterfly. Of the
"Golden" Skippers only it and the Silver Spotted Skipper, Hesperia
comma, are this large. The latter species has conspicuous silver
spots on the underside which venatus lacks. It is fairly early to
emerge, following the spring butterflies in early June. This is earlier
than most of the other Golden Skippers too which are summer butterflies.
They fly powerfully and are sometimes territorial.
