Dappled sunlight habitat.

We were extremely happy to find this very local species in Greece by complete accident. There were half a dozen butterflies gliding gently about 3 feet above the ground and feeding on the Euphorbias as seen above.

They were flying in a delightful spot where we found dozens of special butterflies. We have since revisited the site twice. In July 2000 we thought the recent road development had so badly affected this small area that we found nothing. Revisiting in May 2004 the place was alive with insects and sappho was re-discovered. This time we found it amongst the trees in the dappled light around a small stream. Here it would settle on damp ground and rocks at the stream side.
