In north Africa this species
replaces its very close relative the Adonis Blue, Lysandra bellargus.
Externally punctifera is slightly larger on average. The male
appears to be of a brighter blue and perhaps the most distinctive
feature is the row submarginal spots on the upperside of the male.
However, I've seen the odd male bellargus in Europe with the same spots,
at least on the hindwing.
The habitat is anywhere
grassy amongst hills away from the coast. These may be very sparsely
grassed areas too but more usually it is in meadows near woodland. It is
widespread and common, so is easy to find in the right area. Thus it is
a surprise to me that I only have these tow photos and none showing the
upperside.
