This is an extremely variable butterfly in size, wing patterns and colouration. It flies on the high mountains of central Europe, including the Pyrenees and the Alps. The most constant feature is the underside hindwing that has streaked orange, yellow or white markings particularly in space 4. In the Pyrenees though the local subspecies constans flies which has hardly any markings at all.

It is a common butterfly of alpine meadows which is why I'm so surprised I have so few photos of it.
