Male
This is a high altitude butterfly, often found on
mountain passes and at damp patches where the males can be found taking
liquids and salts. I find the three best places to find butterflies
taking salts at high altitudes in the mountains are:
sandy or find gravel areas beside larger streams/ rivers
muddy areas maintained by cows as they cross and drink at smaller
streams (including in the middle of wide open grassy meadows)
bases of rocky escarpments or small cliffs created by roads
cutting into a hillside.
It is a very attractive butterfly. The males are of a cool blue on
the uppersides. The females are largely brown. The undersides are
different between the sexes too, more orange on the female and the
submarginal forewing spots are bolder with respect to the male.
