With temperatures every day well above 20C for yet another week, it was no surprise to find S. orion and E triaria flying in good numbers and on my earliest ever date. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#09Apr Sun, 10 April 2011 21:00:00 CET What's flying 2011 02.04.11 Hundreds of butterflies flying, 24 species found. After 2 weeks of well above average temperatures, when the mercury hit 25C today it was not suprising to find so many butterflies flying. Increadible views of 2 N. antiopa patrolling two neighbouring territories of about 50m length each above a small stream. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#02Apr Sun, 02 April 2011 21:00:00 CET What's flying 2011 24.03.11 Warm and sunny, more butterflies on the wing. More butterflies were flying in warm sunshine today. Very nice to see half a dozen very fresh C. dia patrolling over grassy meadows. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#24Mar Thu, 24 March 2011 21:00:00 CET What's flying 2011 14.03.11 Lunchtime suprises: G. rhamni and L. sinapis flying in the village despite largely overcast conditions. The first male G. rhamni is always a treat after the dark winter months. L. sinapis was a big surprise as it is early for this species and I've only very rarely seen it in my part of Switzerland before. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#14Mar Tue, 15 March 2011 07:00:00 CET What's flying 2011 11.03.11 N polychloros is flying in Vaud during continued fine weather. The majestic sight of N. polychloros swooping around the treetops greeted me today at lunchtime. P. rapae was also flying with the usual but this year rather uncommon A. urticae. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#11Mar Sat, 12 March 2011 07:00:00 CET What's flying 2011 05.03.11 V. atalanta -it is cool but the sun is strong. A V. atalanta in the garden was surprising due to the cold. But the sun is strong and clearly sufficient to get the butterflies flying. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#05Mar Sun, 05 March 2011 07:00:00 CET What's flying 23.02.11 Black Kites return The year's first Black Kite is back in the region, a normal season for them, but Crocuses and Snow Drops are flowering in the garden 10 days earlier than the last 2 years. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#28Feb Mon, 28 February 2011 07:00:00 CET What's flying 24.02.11 Red Book of Butterflies in Turkey Red Book of Butterflies in Turkey, published by DKM - 95 of Turkey's most threatened and little known butterflies http://www.dkm.org.tr/eng/red_list_eng.html Thur, 24 February 2011 22:00:00 CET Publications 14.02.2011 The butterfly year kicks off. Warm sunny conditions continue, but only A. urticae is tempted to fly. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#14Feb Sun 14 February 2011 21:00:00 CET What's flying 06.02.2011 The butterfly year kicks off. With temperatures well above 10C, the first A. urticae are flying. Plenty of Q. quercus eggs and the exciting find of the day: two N. ilicis eggs. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2011Blog.htm#2Feb Sun 6 February 2011 21:00:00 CET What's flying 17.06.2010 European Journal of Entomology High quality papers on entomology at www.eje.cz http://www.eje.cz Thur, 17 June 2010 21:00:00 CET Web resources 16.05.2010 Shockingly cold and mostly cloudy - what luck to find my first ever P. armoricanus (Obethur's Grizzled Skipper) in Switzerland. A trip to the Valais in dull dark cold conditions looked like a waste of time, but a few bright spells was all that was needed, even between 8 and a maximum 11C, to get the butterflies flying. New to the year were P. armoricanus, M. didyma (Spotted Fritillary), H. lucina (Duke of Burgundy Fritillary) and E. simplonia (Mountain Dappled White). http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2010blog.htm#16May Sun, 16 May 2010 21:00:00 CET What's flying 12.05.2010 Once again brief sunny spells around midday - just enough for another 3 new species for the year. At a local meadow, the years first marvelous L. bellargus (Adonis Blue), M. parthenoides (Meadow Fritillary) and a single E. medusa (Woodland Ringlet) were flying. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2010blog.htm#12May Thur, 13 May 2010 20:00:00 CET What's flying 11.05.2010 Warm, brief sunny spells, C. hyale (Pale Clouded Yellow) over damp meadows. 10 days of miserable dull damp dark weather was briefly broken this lunchtime. The behaviour of the Colias patrolling over damp pastureland confirmed my suspcions that they were my year's first C. hyale. E. alcetas (Provencal Short Tailed Blue) were common, but not a single E. argiades (Short Tailed Blue) amongst them. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2010blog.htm#11May Thur, 13 May 2010 20:00:00 CET What's flying 29.04.2010 Very hot and sunny weather brings out the blues At last P. icarus (Common Blue) is on the wing and E. alectas (Provencal Short Tailed Blue) is common after work in the car park. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2010blog.htm#29Apr Thur, 29 Apr 2010 20:00:00 CET What's flying 28.04.2010 Hot conditions bring forth more butterflies for the year. A long lunch hour in hot sunny conditions was a delight. The highlights this lunchtime being A. levana (Map) and half a dozen hilltopping P. machaon (Swallowtail). http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2010blog.htm#28Apr Wed, 28 Apr 2010 22:30:00 CET What's flying 25.04.2010 Iberis semipervirens - it really does attract P. mannii (Southern Small White) Another very hot sunny day, this time spent in the garden gardening. Happy to see my newly planted Candytuft (Iberis semipervirens) attracting a male P. mannii into the garden. The females are sure to follow. http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2010blog.htm#25Apr Sun, 25 Apr 2010 21:30:00 CET What's flying 24.04.2010 The heat of spring is with us and yet another 10 new species are flying this weekend. The mercury hit 25C and the species list a confirmed 33 on the day - that's 10 new species for the year. Great to see P. onopordi (Rosy Grizzled Skipper), E. triaria (de Prunner's Ringlet), S. orion (Chequered Blue) and yet more N. antiopa (Camberwell Beauty). http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2010blog.htm#24Apr Sun, 24 Apr 2010 22:00:00 CET What's flying 18.04.2010 P. edusa and P. mannii and another 7 new species for the year. Hot sun and warm temperatures tempted out 26 species today, an increase of 9 compared to last weekend. The highlights were P. edusa (Eastern Bath White) and P. mannii (Southern Small White). http://www.eurobutterflies.com/misc/blogs/2010blog.htm#18Apr Sun, 18 Apr 2010 22:10:00 CET What's flying
